HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The No. 16 national seed Southern Miss opens play in the 2025 NCAA Hattiesburg Regional with Ivy League champion Columbia Friday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. The game time is set for 6 p.m.
The other opening-round contest pits Miami (31-24) and Alabama (41-16), starting at 2 p.m.
The Golden Eagles (44-14) had their school-record 18-game winning streak snapped last Sunday in the Sun Belt Conference championship contest, falling to Coastal Carolina, who also will serve as a NCAA Regional host.
Columbia (29-17) defeated Harvard 14-6 in the Ivy League to earn an automatic qualification to the tournament.
This will be the third meeting between Southern Miss and the Lions, as the two teams played a two-game midweek series during the 2017 campaign. The Golden Eagles won both of those meetings, winning the first game 4-3 and the second one 20-5.
Southern Miss has enjoyed its best month offensively by posting a .327 batting average with 22 home runs and 108 RBI over 13 games during the month. The team also enjoys a 12-1 record this month as its pitching staff is allowing just a 2.39 ERA.
In the Sun Belt championship game, the team collected three home runs which established a school record with 97 for a single season, besting the old mark of 95 set in 1997.
Coach Christian Ostrander announced that senior right-handed pitcher Matt Adams will get the start against the Lions in the opener. Adams has posted a 6-2 record with a 3.93 earned run average with 77 strikeouts and only 20 walks in 71 innings of work.
