HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss junior second baseman Nick Monistere (Brandon, Miss.) earned the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honors Tuesday in a vote conducted by all 14 league schools.
Monistere finished the week with a .438 batting average (7-for-16) to go along with an on-base percentage of .500 and a slugging percentage of 1.062. His totals also included six runs, a double, three home runs and 10 RBI.
After gaining a walk and a run scored in the midweek contest at No. 12 Alabama, Monistere opened the series at Texas State with a solo home run en route to a 2-for-2 performance with two runs, a double and two RBI. In the middle game, he posted a 2-for-4 performance with a run and an RBI.
In the series finale, Monistere homered twice and drove in a career-best seven runs, despite the Golden Eagles getting walked off in the ninth in a 11-10 setback. His at bats included a two-run homer that cut a deficit to 4-2, before giving the Golden Eagles their first lead of the game with a three-run homer in the sixth, making the score 7-6. He added a two-run single to increase the visitor's lead in the seventh. He also fielded all 13 chances successfully over the four games.
His offensive output produced the first seven-RBI contest for a Golden Eagle since Reed Trimble collected that many versus Florida Atlantic on May 15, 2021, in the second game of a doubleheader. It also was Monistere's first two-homer game of the year.
This is the first Golden Eagle Player of the Week honor in 2025 as well as Monistere's first weekly award from the league.
Southern Miss (24-12) returns to action Tuesday night when they complete an eight-game road swing at Southeastern Louisiana (29-7). Game time is set for 6 p.m., and can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
