MOBILE, Ala.-Southern Miss Softball (18-17, 5-3 Sun Belt) secured the series win over South Alabama (15-20, 4-4 Sun Belt) with a 3-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Jaguar Field.
The Golden Eagles followed their series-opening victory Friday with another strong performance, highlighted by a combined effort in the circle from starter Natalie Herrington and Kayla Giardina, as well as a season-high three-hit game from Shelby Allen.
With the win, Southern Miss has now claimed back-to-back conference series for the first time since joining the Sun Belt and for the first time overall since 2019. Additionally, the Golden Eagles have won consecutive games against South Alabama for the first time in the teams' all-time series history, which dates back to 2007.
Herrington earned the win after tossing three shutout innings, allowing just two hits and two walks. Giardina took over in the fourth and picked up her second save of the season, limiting the Jaguars to one run on two hits and a walk over four innings while striking out one.
After two scoreless innings, Southern Miss broke through in the third. Allen led off with a single, and Carrie Green followed with a walk to put two runners aboard. South Alabama made a pitching change, bringing in Olivia Cato in relief of Sydney Scapino. A sacrifice fly from Maddie Weeks brought in the game's first run.
The Golden Eagles kept South Alabama off the board in the bottom half of the inning, as Kayce Bennett made the tag at home on the throw from Mikaila Fox to prevent a run on Gabby Stagner's single.
Southern Miss extended its lead in the fourth when Bennett roped a double down the left-field line. Pinch-runner Paris Ferguson came around to score on an RBI single from Allen, making it 2-0.
Fox turned a double play to end the fifth, making a diving catch and then throwing first to tag the runner out.
Allen loaded the bases in the sixth with her third hit of the game, leading to an RBI single from Hannah Christian, who extended her hitting streak to eight games, the longest of her career and the team's longest active streak.
While Stephanie Gonzalez hit a solo home run in the sixth to prevent a shutout, Giardina ended the frame with a strikeout and the Golden Eagles sat the Jaguars down in order in the seventh to seal the series win for Southern Miss.
