PEARL, Miss. – Davis Gillespie broke open a deadlocked game by belting a three-run home run to cap a four-run fifth inning in leading Southern Miss to a 6-2 non-conference baseball victory over Ole Miss Tuesday night at Trustmark Park in front of 3,498.
The No. 19 ranked Golden Eagles (15-6) split the season series with the No. 18 Rebels (15-5) as Southern Miss made its only trip to Pearl for the season.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the fifth, Jake Cook walked with one out. Ozzie Pratt, who had two hits in the contest, then singled before Gillespie hit a 0-1 Gunner Dennis pitch over the left field wall to give the designated home squad the lead for good. Carson Paetow added to the lead later in the frame with a two-out run-scoring double that plated Matthew Russo, who walked earlier in the frame.
Southern Miss initially took the lead with a pair of runs in the opening frame. Cook, who extended his hitting streak to eight games later with a second-inning triple, opened the first with a walk before scoring on a double down the right field line by Pratt. After a couple of outs, Nick Monistere singled through the left side to score Pratt.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed a stellar outing from starter Matt Adams, who limited the Rebels to a pair of runs on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts, but did not figure in the decision.
Adams kept Ole Miss off the board until the third when Campbell Smithwick and Brayden Randle opened the inning with singles. After a couple of outs, Mitchell Sanford tripled for the second time in the contest, scoring both runners.
The Rebels threatened again in the fifth by getting a pair of runners on with two outs against Adams. Southern Miss then went to the pen and to Chandler Best promptly got a flyout to center to end threat. Best was credited with the win and improved to 1-1.
Josh Och then thew 2 2/3 scoreless frames for Southern Miss, giving up just two walks with three strikeouts, before Colby Allen came in to get out of a bases loaded jam in the eight with a strikeout.
Allen then worked himself into another bases loaded situation in the ninth, but got Luke Hill to ground into a double play to end the game. Allen, who threw the final 1 1/3 innings, earned his fifth save.
Dennis was tagged with the loss by giving up four runs on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts and fell to 1-1.
Southern Miss returns to action this weekend when they travel to ULM for a Sun Belt Conference series. The set begins Friday at 6 p.m.
