Green's Career Night Propels Southern Miss to Extra-Inning Victory at Alabama State

Freshman Carrie Green led the Golden Eagles with a career-best four-hit performance, surpassing her three-hit outing last game against North Dakota State. Green became the first Golden Eagle to record four hits in a game this season and the first to notch three doubles in a game since Katie Cleary did so against ULM on March 1, 2014.
Green set up the game-winning run in the eighth with her third double of the game before fellow freshman Hannah Christian drove her home with an RBI double.
Senior Jana Lee then closed out the game in the circle, striking out the final batter to earn her fifth win of the season.
Freshman pitcher Kayla Giardina managed three standout innings in relief for starter Natalie Herrington, striking out a career-high nine batters, including the first eight she faced. Giardina threw 65 pitches, allowing two hits, one walk and two earned runs.
The Golden Eagles remained hot at the plate with 13 hits, extending their streak of double-digit hit games to five—the program's longest stretch in two decades.
Alongside Green's four hits, three other Golden Eagles posted multi-hit performances: Christian, Ryanna Valdivia, and Kayce Bennett. Senior infielder Maddie Weeks extended her hitting streak to 11 games, one of the longest active streaks in the nation, with a single in the first inning.
Southern Miss opened the scoring in the second when Bennett launched her second home run of the season on a solo shot to left field. That sparked a string of four consecutive hits, capped by a two-RBI double from Green that brought home Claire Ginder and Faith Kivett for an early 3-0 lead.
Alabama State responded with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second and tied the game with a two-RBI double from Alana Scott in the third.
The Golden Eagles regained control with a four-run sixth inning. After Valdivia doubled and Bennett drew a walk, Southern Miss took advantage of a fielder's choice and an Alabama State error to score two runs. Green and Christian followed with RBI doubles, giving the Golden Eagles a 7-3 cushion.
Alabama State battled back with a run on a sacrifice bunt and a three-run homer from Talee Sims to even the score at 7-7. Lee entered in relief, and two groundouts ended the Hornets' threat to send the game into extras.
In the eighth, Green and Christian delivered doubles to secure the win as Lee closed out the game in the eighth.
