HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss (19-11, 1-1) dropped a Saturday afternoon game to Louisiana (17-11, 1-1) at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. The 9-1 win for the Ragin' Cajuns evened the series after the Golden Eagles took the Friday contest.
Louisiana got off to a quick start after scoring three runs in the first inning, with the final run coming with two outs. The Ragin' Cajuns tacked on one more run in the second and five in the third before Southern Miss could answer back. Jolie Hays had an RBI single up the middle that scored Carrie Green in the bottom of the third – Green walked earlier in the inning.
Southern Miss finished the game with seven hits and stranded 10 runners on base. Hannah Christian started the game with a base knock and later got stranded after Louisiana escaped the frame. The Golden Eagles had at least one hit in every inning in the five-inning game, including a pair of hits to open the bottom of the fourth.
Madison Johnson and Nealy McManus both contributed with those hits before back-to-back fly outs to center field quickly gave Louisiana two outs. Abbi Troquille walked in that same frame to load the bases, but all three were stranded after a foul out ended the threat.
Johnson finished the game with two hits, which were the most by a Golden Eagle. Madilyn Graham was credited with the loss for Southern Miss after giving up three runs in the first. Briley Whittington and Olivia Christian both came on in relief, with both throwing two innings.
The Golden Eagles and Ragin' Cajuns will play the rubber match on Sunday at 12 p.m. at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. Following the series finale, the Golden Eagles will then travel to UNC Greensboro for a midweek contest on Wednesday before playing a Sun Belt series at App State.
