
Softball Falls 4-1 in Conference Opener Against Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga.-Southern Miss Softball (12-14, 0-1 Sun Belt) fell behind early, dropping Friday's conference opener 4-1 against Georgia Southern (15-11, 1-0 Sun Belt).
Freshman Hannah Christian led the Golden Eagles with two hits, her second consecutive multi-hit game and sixth of the season. Natalie Taylor batted in the team's lone run of the game on an RBI double in the fourth inning.
For Georgia Southern, starter Bailey Holland earned the win while Morgan Kendrick recorded her first save of the season. Senior Jana Lee received the loss, pitching the entirety of the game with seven hits, three walks and four earned runs allowed with one strikeout.
Georgia Southern ended two of Southern Miss' streaks, including the team's five-game streak with ten or more hits, the program's longest in two decades. Maddie Weeks' 11-game hitting streak, one of the nation's longest, was also snapped. Weeks drew a walk and advanced a runner on a sacrifice bunt in the game.
Georgia Southern jumped ahead on an early start, as Faith Barth hit an RBI single to score the first run following a walk and a single from the Eagles' first two batters. The Eagles added a second run on an RBI groundout to second base.
While Georgia Southern advanced two into scoring position the following frame, teh Golden Eagles stranded both on base, leading to a productive inning at-bat. Christian and Mikaila Fox singled, and the Golden Eagles had runners on corners before Holland stranded both with a throw to first base.
Southern Miss broke through in the fourth with two outs, as Claire Ginder singled to right center. Pinch hitting for Faith Kivett, Taylor stepped up to the plate and delivered her third double of the season to bring in Ginder for the Golden Eagles' first run of the game.
Georgia Southern regained its three-run advantage in the sixth. Following Emma Davis' double, Braelynn Queen sent Davis home on a sacrifice fly to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead.
Kendrick and the Eagles retired the side in order to clinch their first conference win of the season.
