Women’s Basketball Stumbles in Road Loss to Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. – Southern Miss women's basketball fell Arkansas State Wednesday night as the Red Wolves made 12 three-point baskets and forced 22 Lady Eagle turnovers to hand Southern Miss a 74-53 loss. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak over the Red Wolves dating back to the 2022-23 season.
The Lady Eagles (9-16, 4-9 Sun Belt) won the opening tipoff and produced the first points of the night thanks to a Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) turnaround jumper off the hands of Nyla Jean (Tampa, Fla.).
Southern Miss went on to score the game's first six points before Arkansas State (16-8, 12-1 Sun Belt) finally got its first points of the evening with 4:15 left in the first quarter. Before Crislyn Rose's basket, the Red Wolves shot 0-of-11 from the floor and 0-of-7 from three-point range.
The Lady Eagle held on to a slim 11-8 advantage after a back-and-forth first 10 minutes. Southern Miss pushed its lead to eight early in the second quarter after back-to-back baskets from Bre Sutton (New Orleans, La.). Arkansas State, the best three-point shooting team in the Sun Belt and second-best in the nation, did not hit their first three-point basket until the 6:30 mark in the second.
The three-point basket off the hands of Bella Weary sparked a 14-0 run which gave Arkansas State its largest lead of the day. The Red Wolves outscored the Lady Eagles to 24-7 in the last 6:30 of the half.
Trinity Rowe (Pikeville, Ky.) helped counter the Red Wolf run with a three-point basket with 3:59 left in the frame. The bucket pushed her past Danielle Johnson for the most made three-pointers by a freshman in team history, giving her 46 to pass Johnson's 45.
Heading into the locker rooms, Southern Miss trailed 36-26 after turning the ball over 10 times in the second quarter.
Neither team found much success from the floor to begin the second half. Melyia Grayson broke a third quarter scoreless tie with 7:17 left in the frame to cut the Arkansas State lead to eight points. Southen Miss trailed by six at the third quarter media break, down 38-32 with 4:52 left in the frame.
Arkansas State struggled from the floor in the frame, opening the third quarter 1-of-11 overall before Mimi McCollister found the basket from deep to push the Red Wolf lead to 41-32.
As a group, the Red Wolves shot just 5-of-18 to pace the Lady Eagle 13-8 in the quarter. A-State's lead stood at 49-34 going into the final frame thanks to an 8-0 Red Wolf run.
Southern Miss mounted a comeback, but the Red Wolves responded early and held on to their lead throughout the fourth quarter. Arkansas State led by as many as 23, holding off each Southern Miss attempt at cutting into the deficit.
Rowe finished the night with five three-point baskets, placing her with 49 on the season. Her five baskets netted her 15 points led Southern Miss. Sutton also found double-figures, finishing with 12 points in the night.
Arkansas State's Mimi McCollister led all scorers with 17 points, accounting for seven of Arkansas State's 28 baskets.

The 2024-25 season of Southern Miss Lady Eagle Basketball marks a major milestone for the program and for The University of Southern Mississippi as the women's basketball program celebrates its 50th season of competition. Following the adoption of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Southern Miss added women's basketball and women's tennis as official athletic programs beginning in the 1975-76 season. Since then, the Lady Eagles have laid out five decades of excellence on and off the court. To celebrate this golden jubilee, Southern Miss women's basketball hosted its 50th Season Celebration and Reunion on Saturday, January 18, against South Alabama at Reed Green Coliseum.
