
Lady Eagles Drop Sun Belt Contest to Troy

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Troy's (14-9, 8-3 Sun Belt) 30 fourth-quarter points swung a five-point game late at Reed Green Coliseum as Southern Miss (8-14, 4-7 Sun Belt) fell 70-45 to the visiting Trojans on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams started the game scoreless before Troy broke through at the 7:10 mark of the first quarter. Southern Miss responded on its next possession to tie the game. Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) gave Southern Miss a 4-2 lead on her first bucket of the day. The bucket also tied Grayson with Joye Lee-McNelis on the all-time scoring charts with 1,512 career points.
Troy tied the game a few possessions later and took a 7-4 lead heading into the media break. After Grayson's basket, Troy scored 11-straight points to take a 13-4 lead before a Morgan Sieper (Tampa, Fla.) triple cut the run. At the end of the first quarter, Southern Miss trailed 15-7 and held a 18.8 (3-of-16) field goal percentage.
Grayson found the basket 30 seconds into the second quarter to take sole possession of 10th-place on the all-time scoring charts. After her make, Troy scored seven-straight points to take a 22-9 lead. Southern Miss called a timeout to stop the run and Nyla Jean (Tampa, Fla.) officially broke the run with a three-point basket of her own.
The basket was Jean's first on the day where she scored 17 to lead all scorers on the day. Jean made her second three on the next possession to cut the game to seven, forcing the Trojans to call a timeout.
The Trojans ran out to another 6-0 run to lead 28-15 before Southern Miss closed out the quarter with a 7-2 run of their own. Southern Miss shot 35.7 percent as a team and tied Troy in second quarter scoring despite the Trojans' 53.8 percent mark on the floor.
After trailing by eight heading into the locker room, Southern Miss struck early in the third quarter as Grayson and Jean scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the game to four points. Jean once again cut it to a one-possession game once again with 4:16 left in the quarter after finishing off an and-one.
Jean cut it to three once again at the free throw line to score her 17th point of the day. The Lady Eagles trailed 38-35 and allowed the Trojans just two more points in the frame to trail 40-35 entering the fourth quarter.
Grayson made it a three-point margin on the first shot of the fourth quarter but the Trojans made four free throws in three trips to the line as part of an 8-0 run. The Trojan run moved to 10-0 before Trinity Rowe (Pikeville, Ky.) scored her first three of the day with 7:41 to play. Troy, however, scored another 11 unanswered to take a 61-40 lead with five minutes to play.
Overall, the Trojans outscored Southern Miss 30-10 in the fourth quarter and scored 28 of the quarter's last 36 points. As a team, Southern Miss finished the game with a season-low 27.1 field goal percentage.
Troy, the nation's leading rebounding team, pulled down 58 boards and held Southern Miss to just 28 on the day. The -30 rebounding margin is the Lady Eagles' worst this season.

The 2024-25 season of Southern Miss Lady Eagle Basketball marks a major milestone for the program and for The University of Southern Mississippi as the women's basketball program celebrates its 50th season of competition. Following the adoption of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Southern Miss added women's basketball and women's tennis as official athletic programs beginning in the 1975-76 season. Since then, the Lady Eagles have laid out five decades of excellence on and off the court. To celebrate this golden jubilee, Southern Miss women's basketball hosted its 50th Season Celebration and Reunion on Saturday, January 18, against South Alabama at Reed Green Coliseum.
