Southern Miss' Winning Streak Ends at Four After Miami Loss
12/6/2025 2:07:00 PM | Men's Basketball
MIAMI, Fla. – A strong second half helped Miami (8-2, 0-0 ACC) pull away to an 88-64 win over Southern Miss (5-4, 0-0 Sun Belt) on Saturday afternoon at the Watsco Center.
The Golden Eagles head back to Hattiesburg 1-1 after picking up a big road win over Radford on Wednesday night. Tylik Weeks and Djahi Binet scored in double figures for the second-straight game to lead the Golden Eagles in the scoring column.
How it Happened
The Golden Eagles started the game on an 8-0 run after Curt Lewis banged a three-pointer to get Southern Miss started. Three other Southern Miss players followed before Malik Reneau hit back-to-back three-pointers to get the Hurricanes on the scoreboard.
Southern Miss never trailed in the first half, but the Hurricanes were able to tie the game six different times. Each Miami punch, though, was answered with a Southern Miss basket. Miami went scoreless for nearly six minutes with Southern Miss pulling ahead by five with 7:05 left in the half.
Djahi Binet threw down an alley-oop and a left-handed slam in that stretch, and the Golden Eagles forced a five-second violation to help build the momentum. Miami played itself back into the game over the final minutes of the half as Southern Miss gave up a flurry of baskets. The Golden Eagles were called for three fouls in the final four seconds of the half, which let Miami tie the game on free throws with less than a second on the clock.
Both Tylik Weeks and Binet reached double figures in the first half as the game was tied 34-34 through the first 20 minutes of action. The Golden Eagles went 14-for-28 in the half for a 50 percent clip, while Miami was limited to a 35.5 percent shooting percentage.
Southern Miss started the second half with a pair of Dylan Brumfield free throws and then got an Isaac Taveras jumper to go ahead by two. Miami managed to tie the game on an Ernest Udeh Jr. layup, but Weeks hit two free throws to regain the lead.
Timotej Malovec hit a three-pointer to put the Hurricanes ahead 41-40, which started a 21-6 run over the next six minutes. Malovec's third triple in that run put Miami ahead by 18 with 10 minutes to play.
Chiante' Tramble and Fallou Diagne each scored on separate possessions to make it a 15-point game, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get.
