How it Happened
Tylik Weeks got the scoring started for Southern Miss for the third time this season as he made a nice left-handed layup. The Golden Eagles got a nice offensive boost from Brewer Carruth, who had nine points in the first half.
Southern Miss pushed ahead by four on a pair of free throws from Weeks halfway through the half. Arkansas State got a three-pointer from Christian Harmon that tied the game, and then Carruth hit a jumper to swing the score back in Southern Miss' favor.
The Golden Eagles then went on a nearly six-minute drought without a made field goal, which allowed Arkansas State to grab the momentum. The Red Wolves used a 10-0 run to pull ahead by 10 with 3:38 to play in the half. Trailing by as many as 13, Southern Miss got its spark back at the end of the half as it closed out on a 6-0 run to make it a seven-point game at the break.
Djahi Binet went on a 7-0 run to start the second half and tie the game at 39-all -- Binet's last layup in the run forced an Arkansas State timeout. Freddy Salam-Sylla gave the Red Wolves a basket out of the timeout, and then the two teams went back and forth. Over four minutes, the game had five ties and three lead changes.
Arkansas State used a 10-0 run to take an eight-point lead before a Weeks jumper ended it to make 56-50. The Red Wolves follow with a 6-2 run to pull ahead by 10 with 9:23 left to play. Weeks cut it back to eight twice, but Arkansas State had an answer each time. Tegra Izay scored to start a 6-0 run that included a Carruth steal off an inbounds pass that led to a basket.
Southern Miss cut the game to three with 4:08 to play on a Curt Lewis three-pointer. Despite the Greenhouse getting loud, Arkansas State worked its way to a 10-point lead in just over two minutes. That lead held steady as the Golden Eagles fell by seven.
