Southern Miss Meets SMU in Final Game of Road Swing

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball looks to play its third game away from home in five days and close out a week-long road trip against SMU on Monday night. Tipoff at the Mustangs' Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas, is set for 6:30 p.m. CT with broadcasts on ACC Network Extra and the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The Lady Eagles (6-2) return to the United States after an 0-2 finish at the Cancun Challenge in Puerto Aventuras, Mexico, late last week. Southern Miss suffered its first loss of the year to UAB, 77-72, and closed the tournament with a 110-56 loss against No. 25/24 North Carolina State. Meloney Thames (Philadelphia, Miss.) was named to the All-Cancun Challenge Yucatan Division Team after averaging 12 points per game.
Despite recent setbacks, four Lady Eagles are still averaging double-figures, led by Carly Keats' (Philadelphia, Miss.) 14.4 points per game. She's joined by Thames, Jakayla Johnson (Clinton, Miss.) and Sakyia White (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) with White leading the team with 6.4 rebounds per game and Johnson closely following at 5.4 per contest.
Hayleigh Breland (Wiggins, Miss.) averages just below 10.0 per game with 9.4 points per game through eight games, though she does lead the team with 27 assists. Three players have at least 20 assists on the year with Keats and Thames each holding 21. Four Lady Eagles have 10-plus steals on the year, led by White's 12 and other being Johnson and Breland both with 11 and Keats with 10.
As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 81.1 points per game and holding opponents to 67.0 per game on average. The team's scoring average ranks 31st in the nation with Southern Miss in the top-100 of Division in 15 total statistical categories, including four inside the top 50: turnovers per game (31st), three-point percentage (32nd), rebounds per game (35th) and three-pointers per game (39th).
Southern Miss meets SMU (2-5) for the 11th time in program history and first time since the Mustangs' departure from Conference USA. The Lady Eagles trail SMU in the all-time series 4-6 since the first meeting on Nov. 24, 1989, in the Hobby Hilton-SMU Classic where Southern Miss won 78-57. The two teams played again in the 1995 NCAA Tournament First Round at Stanford's Maples Pavilion with SMU winning 96-95 in overtime. With SMU joining Conference USA in 2005, the two teams played in each of the next eight seasons with SMU winning five of the eight C-USA meetings.
SMU won the last meeting between the two on Jan. 17, 2013, and enter Monday's game with a 2-5 overall record under first-year head coach Adia Barnes, who arrived on the Hilltop this season after nine seasons at Arizona. The Mustangs broke a five-game losing streak in their last game against Winthrop and currently rank in the top 100 in five categories: steals per game (37th), offensive rebounds per game (38th), blocks per game (39th), bench points per game (45th) and turnovers forced per game (89th).
Two Mustangs average double figures, led by Tyi Skinner's 14.2 points per game. She is joined by Zahra King (13.4) with two other Mustangs scoring over nine per game in Sahnya Jah (9.7) and Kyla Deck (9.0), though Jah has not played in the last four games. Technically, SMU's leading rebounder is team rebounds with 6.1 per game and 43 total. SMU's best-rebounding player is Miriam Ibezim, who averages 5.4. Deck leads the team with 17 helpers and 27 steals while Anaya Brown leads the team with 34 blocks.
As a team, SMU is scoring 66.6 points per game and allowing 67.4 per game. They pull in 38.3 boards per contest and have a plus-19 turnover margin on the year. Of note, the Mustangs lost all 12 letterwinners from last year's team and brought in 15 newcomers in the offseason – 12 Division I transfers and three high school signees.
