BUFFALO, N.Y. – Ten Golden Eagles scored despite Southern Miss (0-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) falling 85-79 at Buffalo (1-0, 0-0 MAC) on Monday night in the MAC-SBC Challenge season opener.
Junior guard Isaac Taveras dropped a career-high 28 points at Alumni Arena as the Santo Domingo, D.R. went 11-for-15 from the floor. Chiante Tramble added 11 points and New York native Tylik Weeks went for 13 points.
Ryan Sabol scored the first of his 32 points to get the game started, though Southern Miss settled in following the first points of the game and worked its way to a 15-point lead nine minutes in. Tramble went three-for-three from deep in that stretch to propel the Golden Eagles to 60 percent shooting clip in the first half.
After a 38-36 lead at the half, Weeks came out in the second half and converted an and-one that kept the momentum on Southern Miss' side. Buffalo, though, kept answering back to every Golden Eagle bucket and eventually tied the game at 64-all with 8:04 left to play in the game.
The Bulls then took their first lead since the first half on a made three-pointer less than a minute later. Southern Miss hung around and got within one point five times over the final seven minutes. The pivotal point in the game came with 2:40 left and the Bulls ahead 74-71. Taveras converted a nice move in the lane that was whistled for a defensive foul, sending him to the line to finish the three-point play and tie the game.
However, after a lengthy review, it was called an offensive foul on Taveras and the score remained 74-71. Southern Miss' defense produced another stop after the momentum swing and Taveras made a pair of free throws to make it 74-73. The Golden Eagles answered another Buffalo shot to make it 78-77 with just about a minute to play.
Sabol made his seventh three-pointer of the night after that, and it ultimately iced the game for the Bulls. Sabol went 7-for-14 from deep. Buffalo finished the game shooting 45.3 percent from the floor, while the Golden Eagles shot 54 percent.
Djahi Binet and Weeks led the way with six rebounds each; meanwhile, Brewer Carruth had four rebounds to go along with six points – that tied his previous career high. Southern Miss went 19-for-20 from the charity stripe, but Buffalo managed to attempt 36 free throws.
