Thirteen Golden Eagles Score in 93-57 Rout Over Tougaloo

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss (1-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) won its 10th-straight home opener after downing Tougaloo (0-3, 0-0 HBCUAC), 93-57, on Monday night in Hattiesburg.
After a 28-point game Monday night at Buffalo, Isaac Taveras followed with the first double-double of his career as he went for 16 points and 10 rebounds. Taveras' efforts in the first half helped overcome a slow start for the Golden Eagles.
Felipe Patino added another layer of offensive help as the Canadian drilled four three-pointers in the first half. Tougaloo hit nine of its first 14 shots, which pitted the Golden Eagles in a 24-21 hole. The Bulldogs then went on a cold streak, missing their next eight shots over a seven-minute span.
Southern Miss took its first lead of the night on a Patino three with 7:26 on the clock, then built the lead on the back end of three-straight Patino triples. The sophomore sparked a 21-2 run that flipped the score to 43-28 for the Golden Eagles.
Israel Hart knocked down a pair of free throws just before the half that gave Southern Miss a 17-point advantage going into the break. The Golden Eagles shot 50 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes and knocked down six three-pointers.
The second half was all about Dalyn Brandon. The Baltimore, Md. native checked into his first basketball game in 617 days after rehabbing from an injury all last season. Brandon made a big splash as he scored 10 points over the final 10 minutes, including a pair of three-pointers and a thunderous dunk.
In total, 11 different Golden Eagles scored in the second half as Southern Miss outscored Tougaloo 41-22. Southern Miss never went on a run bigger than seven over the final 20 minutes, but its defense held the Bulldogs to only six made field goals in the half.
Southern Miss shot 44.8 percent from the floor en route to Jay Ladner's seventh-straight home opening win. The Golden Eagles connected on 13 three-pointers, which is the most since draining 13 against South Alabama at home last season.
Hart finished with 11 points to join Brandon, Patino and Taveras in double figures. Patino finished with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from deep. Tegra Izay and IJ Ezuma went for eight and seven rebounds, respectively. Ezuma added five points.
Southern Miss moved to 69-12 in home openers dating back to the 1945-46 season.
