About Southern Miss
The Lady Eagles (4-0) got their first nonconference road win in two seasons in a gritty 67-61 win at Jacksonville State. Jakayla Johnson (Clinton, Miss.) led Southern Miss with 17 points on the night and was instrumental in the Lady Eagles' first road test of the year. Southern Miss had to dig itself out of an eight-point hole late in the second quarter, including a six-point deficit heading into the second half.
Whitney Hart (Baton Rouge, La.) provided a much-needed spark coming out of the third quarter media timeout. The redshirt freshman scored six unanswered points to give Southern Miss the lead once and for all. Hart got a layup, a second-chance put back and sank two free throws at the charity stripe to grab back control of the game.
While offense was at a premium, Southern Miss found its defense in the second half. The Lady Eagles forced a total of 24 Jacksonville State turnovers off of 15 steals, both season-highs for the Lady Eagle defense.
About Southeastern
The Lady Lions enter the game 1-2 overall after an up-and-down start to the Jeff Dow era. Southeastern rolled to a 105-49 win over Centenary before No. 5 LSU ran way with a 115-26 win in Baton Rouge. In their last game out, Southeastern narrowly lost at Arkansas, 68-60, after leading late in the second quarter.
Southeastern does not return any players or staff from last year's squad that won the Southland Conference regular season title and made the WBIT. Former head coach Ayla Guzzardo, in a near-mirror image of Missy Bilderback, moved from Southeastern to McNeese this past offseason and took a large portion of the team with her. The Lady Lions hired within the league as well, bringing in Jeff Dow and his long coaching career from Incarnate Word.
Natalie Huff leads the Lady Lions with 9.7 points per game while Taylor Ross' 5.7 rebounds per game are a team high. Huff also paces the group in assists (9) and steals (10) while Ross' 66.7 percent rate from the field is tops on the team. As a team, Southeastern is scoring 63.7 points per game with a 35.0 field goal percentage and 26.8 percent rate beyond the arc. SLU has a -10.7 rebounding margin with 33.0 boards per game and a 0.74 assist-to-turnover ratio.
The Southeastern Series
This is the 13th all-time meeting between Southern Miss and Southeastern with the Lady Eagles holding on to a 7-5 advantage. Last season, Southeastern won 68-61 on their home floor to snap a five-game Southern Miss winning streak.
Southern Miss is 5-1 against Southeastern at Reed Green Coliseum compared to just 2-4 on the road. Southern Miss has won five-straight games at Reed Green Coliseum over Southeastern.
