HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Drey Barrett (Holtville, Ala.) and Ty Long (Ripley, Miss.) each collected home runs to propel the Southern Miss Gold to a 4-1 series sweeping victory over the Black squad Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in the best of five Fall World Series.
Six Gold pitchers combined to no hit the Black team including McCarty English (Ocean Springs, Miss.) who opened the game by retiring all nine batters he faced with a strikeout to earn the victory as they completed the three-game sweep.
The Gold jumped out early with a pair of runs in the first inning. After a one-out triple by Braden Maranto (Amory, Miss.), Barrett lined a Thomas Crabtree (Collierville, Tenn.) pitch over the left field wall to make the score 2-0.
The lead increased to 3-0 one frame later starting with a Gray Eubanks (Huntingdon, Tenn.) double opening the frame. After a wild pitch and a walk to Maranto, Barrett hit a screaming liner back at Crabtree for an out. Crabtree tried to double off Maranto at first, but his throw went wild, and Eubanks scored on the play.
Crabtree suffered the loss by allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts over two-plus innings.
Long finished the Gold scoring with a solo homer to open the third.
The Black team collected their only run with four consecutive walks in the sixth, but Josh Och (Victoria, Minn.) got out of the inning with a fly out to left.
The game completes the fall portion of the Golden Eagles' schedule, and they will return to full practice in January before opening the season Friday, Feb. 13 at home against UC Santa Barbara.
The season ticket renewal process for the 28-game home schedule begins Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m.
