Golden Eagles Battle to the Final Whistle in Lafayette
10/2/2025 9:55:00 PM | Women's Soccer
LAFAYETTE, La. – Southern Miss women's soccer (2-9-1, 1-4-0 SBC) showed resolve throughout a tough road tilt, falling to Louisiana (5-4-3, 2-1-2 SBC) 5-0 on Thursday night at the Home Bank Soccer & Track Complex.
The Ragin' Cajuns struck in the 9th minute and added a second just before halftime, but the Golden Eagles continued to compete and create moments after the break. Southern Miss generated three shots on target and earned four corner kicks, three of them in the final 15 minutes, as the visitors pushed to get on the board late. Lorilee Taylor paced the attack with three shots, one on frame, while Chloe Taylor and Rhiley Potteiger each tested the goalkeeper as the Black & Gold built pressure down the stretch.
Defensively, the Golden Eagles held their shape through extended Louisiana possession, forcing the hosts into six offsides with disciplined line management and timely recoveries. Maddie Ellis made a key first-half stop across 63 minutes of action to keep the match within reach, and Lena Blake closed strong in goal as Southern Miss continued to contest every ball to the whistle. Louisiana finished with a 15–5 edge in shots and a 7–3 advantage in shots on goal, while corners were 8–4 in favor of the hosts.
The second half featured some of Southern Miss' most incisive sequences of the night, winning second balls in midfield, drawing set pieces in the attacking third, and stretching the back line with wide runs. The late wave of corners produced dangerous service as the Golden Eagles kept the pressure on, reflecting the group's growth in game management and late-match execution.
