MONROE, La. – Southern Miss volleyball earned a 3-0 win against ULM Friday night in Monroe.
Southern Miss opened the first set with a 7-1 lead behind three consecutive service aces from libero Sunni Sheppard. Early on, ULM found it difficult to settle into a rhythm, making multiple attack errors while facing a strong Southern Miss defense that included blocks by Torrey Tkach. ULM was able to close the gap to six points, but offensive plays by Aysu Dalogullari and Sadie McAda held off the Warhawks. The Golden Eagles remained in control, finishing the set 25-17.
Louisiana Monroe returned with a fight in the second set, gaining an early 4-3 lead. The teams fought back and forth, resulting in 14 ties throughout the set. The Golden Eagles' well-rounded attack, including key kills from Tkach and McAda, kept them in the game. Although the set was tied at 21-21, Lindsey Smith's service ace and Dalogullari's kill put Southern Miss ahead. The Golden Eagles prevailed to seal the set, 25-21.
ULM started strong in the third set, taking a quick 2-0 lead. Southern Miss responded with key kills from Madison Baldridge and another solid defensive performance by Tkach and McAda, who teamed up for several blocks. The set remained close, with ULM trailing just 21-20 late in the game. However, Southern Miss remained composed under pressure, pulling away with a series of kills from Tkach and a solo block from McAda to win the set, 25-21, sealing the 3-0 match.
Dalogullari led the Golden Eagles with 12 kills and 12 digs, earning a double-double. Sheppard finished the match with 18 digs, while setter Francesca Panunzio recorded 27 assists.
The Golden Eagles improve to 5-8 (1-0 Sun Belt) while the Warhawks fall to 4-9 (0-1 Sun Belt). The teams will compete again Saturday at 2 p.m. to finish the series.
