HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher has never shied away from tough competition.
Heading into his seventh season at the helm of the program, the Golden Eagles once again play a tough slate in 2024-25 that he envisions will ready his team for a run to the NCAA Tournament in May.
While the Golden Eagles return to seven events that they have previously played in prior seasons, they have added a trip to Madison, Wis., for the Badger Invitational (Sept. 29-Oct 1) during the fall portion of the schedule with the addition of the Seminole Intercollegiate (Mar. 10-11) in Thomasville, Ga., and the Memphis Intercollegiate (Mar. 31-Apr. 1) in Memphis during the spring part of the slate.
"Many will notice some familiar events on our schedule for this season," said Brescher. "These events check all the boxes for our program. Most importantly, our returning players are very familiar with these repeat golf courses. Which is an advantage in the sport of golf."
The Golen Eagles open the year by returning to the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate (Sept. 8-10) at Choudrant, La., along with the Bearcat Invitational (Sept. 16-17) in Cincinnati and the Fallen Oak Collegiate (Oct. 19-21), tri-hosted by the Golden Eagles, Ole Miss and Mississippi State, to conclude the fall.
Southern Miss begins the spring by returning to the Hal Williams Collegiate (Feb. 10-11) in Mobile, while also participating in the Dorado Beach Collegiate (Feb. 23-25) in Puerto Rico, the All American Collegiate (Mar. 17-18) in Houston and finish the spring regular season at the Mossy Oak Collegiate (Apr. 14-15) in West Point at Mossy Oak Golf Club.
This combination of the older events and newer ones gives the Golden Eagles a chance to travel the country and play on all types of courses which aids in the development of their players.
"Our newer events are a showcase of our goal and reach at Southern Miss," said Brescher. "We want to prepare our players for life after college golf. Meaning, traveling the country to compete in different grasses/climates so they develop at a quicker rate. We are fortunate to have approximately fifteen courses to qualify on in our area. Getting our guys out of their "home course" comfort zone during qualifying gives us the best opportunity to have elite performance in unfamiliar environments."
Southern Miss opens the postseason with the Sun Belt Conference Championship (Apr. 21-24) at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Miss. The event starts with stroke play the first three days, followed by the top four teams advancing into match play to determine a team champion. It caps off a year that features 11 tournaments in nine different states.
"This schedule is first class in all regards," said Brescher. "Couple that with the depth of talent we have in 2024-25, my expectations are for a good season for our program."
