HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss right-handed pitcher Niko Mazza (Madison, Miss.) was chosen in the eighth round (pick No. 238) by the San Francisco Giants, Monday, on the second day of the 2024 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
In three seasons for the Golden Eagles, Mazza posted a 14-5 record with a 4.17 ERA. This past spring, he earned second-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors and was a NCAA Knoxville Regional all-tournament team pick.
Mazza appeared in 18 games with 16 starts and recorded a 9-3 record with a 3.99 ERA to go along with 95 strikeouts and just 36 walks in 90 1/3 innings of work.
Mazza posted seven or more strikeouts in eight outings during the year and did not allow an earned run from April 16-27, spanning 15 1/3 innings. In his starts, he went five or more innings 12 times and pitched his lone career complete-game, a two-hit shutout, over Northern Kentucky in the Knoxville Regional which earned him unanimous honors to that all-regional team.
He earned his lone Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week award for his opening day victory over Marist in which he fanned eight and walked none, giving up no runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings.
Mazza becomes the first Golden Eagle to get chosen by the Giants since Trey Sutton was picked by the organization in the 20th round of the 2008 draft.
The final day of the draft concludes, Tuesday, with rounds 11-20 starting at 1 p.m. CT. The final day's events can be followed by going to mlb.com.
