KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Ozzie Pratt, Slade Wilks and Matthew Russo each drove in three-run as Southern Miss registered a 15-3 loser's bracket victory over Indiana Sunday afternoon at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (43-19) won for the ninth-straight time when they faced elimination in a NCAA Regional dating back to the 2022 Hattiesburg Regional. Southern Miss scored in just three innings in the contest, but that included a five-run first, a six-run third and a four-run fourth to advance to play No. 1 national seed Sunday night at 5 p.m. CT.
The first three Golden Eagle batters reached base off IU starter Brayden Risedorph. After walking Dalton McIntyre to lead off the game, Pratt doubled into the right field corner scoring McIntyre from first. Wilks then singled up the middle which scored Pratt. Wilks extended his hitting streak to 35 games with his single, which is the second-longest in school history.
After a pair of outs, Russo walked before Wilks scored on a Braden Luke double. Lawson Odom then was hit by a pitch before Gabe Broadus knocked in the final pair of runs with a single up the middle.
Risedorph lasted an inning and suffered the loss by giving up five runs on four hits with two hits and a strikeout to fall to 4-7.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 11-0 in the third. With one out, IU loaded the bases for the Golden Eagles with a hit batter and two walks. Pratt then knocked in the inning's first run with an infield single before Wilks walked in a run.
Davis Gillespie then doubled in two runs, before RBI singles from Russo and Luke rounded out the inning.
Southern Miss added four more runs in the fourth courtesy of a Pratt RBI single, before Wilks knocked in a run with a fielder's choice and Russo plated the final two runs on a double to left by Russo.
In only his second start of the season, Colby Allen (10-2) covered a career-best seven innings to go along with a career-high eight strikeouts, limiting the Hoosiers (33-26-1) to a run on four hits and two walks. His only blemish was a fifth-inning solo home run to Devin Taylor, who belted his 20th of the year.
Cole Boswell, who threw the final two innings, gave up a two-run homer in the ninth to Jasen Oliver for his 10th of the year.
