
Baseball Falls 10-4 to Indiana in NCAA Knoxville Regional Opener

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Brock Tibbetts had three hits and drove in four runs, while Morgan Colopy added two hits and three RBI to lift No. 3 seed Indiana to a 10-4 tournament-opening victory over No. 2 seed Southern Miss Friday afternoon in the NCAA Knoxville Regional at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (41-19) saw a six-game winning streak snapped as they dropped the opening round game of its regional for the second-straight year. Southern Miss will now play the loser of the later game of the day between No. 1 Tennessee and No. 4 Northern Kentucky at 11 a.m. CT, Saturday, in a loser's bracket contest.
The Hoosiers jumped out to an early lead with a pair of tallies in the first. After Nick Mitchell reached on a two-out infield single, Tibbetts followed with a two-run home run, his fourth of the year, to left for the 2-0 advantage.
Colopy then drove in a run in the second with a double, followed by a two-run double for Josh Pyne to give the Hoosiers (33-24-1) a 5-0 advantage.
IU then added two more runs in the fourth on a two-run double by Tibbetts, before increasing the lead to 8-0 in the fifth on an RBI single from Devin Taylor.
The Golden Eagles cut into the lead with three runs in the sixth. After a leadoff single by Slade Wilks to extend his hitting streak to 33, tying Michael Artmann for the second-longest hitting streak in school history, he scored two batters later when Nick Monistere belted his 11th home run of the year to the opposite field over the right field wall. Dalton McIntyre plated the other run when he reached with the bases loaded with two outs on a fielding error by the Hoosier second baseman.
The visitors added two big insurance runs in the ninth on a Colopy two-run homer, his fifth of the year, before the Golden Eagles got one run back in the ninth on an RBI double from Davis Gillespie.
Ty Bothwell, the IU starting pitcher, went 5 2/3 innings to capture the victory and improve to 7-3. He gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks with nine strikeouts. Drew Buhr threw the final 3 1/3 frames to earn his first save.
Oldham suffered the loss by allowing seven runs on 10 hits with two walks and a strikeout. He fell to 7-3 on the season.
