MACON, Ga. – Freshman Ragini Navet climbed 12 spots during the final day of the Brickyard Collegiate to finish as the top Golden Eagle individual, while Southern Miss women's golf finished in fifth.
"Overall, bit of a rough way to end the regular season," said head coach Lucy Nunn Burke. "We had moments of solid play, but trends that we've talked about all season really haunted us. Really proud of Ragini for the last two events and being able to go deep. There is a lot to look forward with the Sun Belt Championship around the corner."
A week after shooting a five-under 67, Navet delivered a three-under 69 during Tuesday's final round. The rookie drained five birdies on the back nine to go along with one of the front nine at Brickyard Golf Club. Merche Corbacho finished one stroke behind Navet after a final round 75 and 11th-place finish. Corbacho finished with four birdies – all came on the back nine.
Momoka Ando bounced back from a tough Monday en route to shooting an even-par 72 today. The Tokyo, Japan native finished her final round with four birdies, including three-straight on the front nine. Ando finished tied for 21st. Jacee Fields held onto a tie for 12th after shooting a six-over 78, while Elena Melich finished tied for 17th after a two-over 74. Alma Betoret shot an eight-over 80 on Tuesday and finished tied for 45th.
Southern Miss' 30 birdies of the 54-hole event were the second most by any team in the field. Corbacho and Navet tied for the best stroke average on par-three holes, while Navet had the lowest average of all Golden eagles on par-five holes.
The Golden Eagles head to Lakewood Golf Club in Point Clear, Ala. for the Sun Belt Championships. The first round will get underway on April 15 and run through April 18.
