Beach Volleyball Ends Season in Sun Belt Conference Championships

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Southern Miss beach volleyball had its season comes to a close in the second day of competition at the Sun Belt Conference Championships. The Golden Eagles dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to (7) ULM to finished the year 14-24.
(7) ULM 3, (6) Southern Miss 2
Day two of the conference tournament featured matches across the losers' bracket of the Sun Belt Conference tournament. A win set up a match against (5) Mercer to continue on in the tournament. A loss meant a trip back home.
Southern Miss made quick work of the Warhawks' top flight as Sadie McAda and Laurel Dennis won in straight sets via 21-13 and 21-16 decisions. Madison Cassidy and Valeria Siakidou Papakyriakou also won in two sets with both coming in 21-18 finals.
ULM countered Southern Miss' two points with two of their own, taking decisions at the second and fourth flights to even the score at 2-2. At this time, Jessica Fairly and Carmen Sanchez Delgado forced the penultimate third set at the fifth flight, winning 21-13 in the second set after dropping the first.
In a back-and-forth affair, Fairly and Delgado fought hard against the Warhawks' fifth pairing. ULM's 5s were able to tie the set and force it to extra points, where the Warhawks won 16-14 to take the set, flight and overall match.
Southern Miss' season comes to a close with a 14-24 overall record and 4-5 record in Sun Belt play. Senior Valeria Siakidou Papakyriakou leaves Southern Miss as the all-time leader in individual wins with 56 career victories. Junior Ola Chudzik is now tied with former Golden Eagle Kellie Garraway with total wins with 51 with another year left to play.
