HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss senior right-hander Will Armistead (Mooreville, Miss.) collected the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week in an announcement from the league office Tuesday afternoon.
In his best outing of the season, Armistead limited Troy to two runs on two hits with a pair of walks and a career-high 10 strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Despite not getting a decision, Armistead left the game in the fifth with a one-run lead and a runner on base. The subsequent reliever gave up a two-run home run to tie the game at 3-3.
He retired eight batters in a row at one point. His strikeout total also tied the most by a Golden Eagle pitcher this season.
This is Armistead first Sun Belt weekly honor and the second award for the program this season, with Niko Mazza winning the first time this season for Southern Miss.
The Golden Eagles return to action tonight when they travel to Hammond to face Southeastern Louisiana. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
