HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team returns home to open a four-game homestand when they entertain Nicholls in a 6 p.m., midweek contest Tuesday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (22-14), with 19 games left on the schedule, conclude the regular season with 12 home tilts along with seven on the road.
This meeting marks the 49th between the two schools with the Golden Eagles leading 29-18-1. The series resumed earlier this season after last playing in 2019. After playing the last five games at neutral sites, the series finally returns to a campus site after 12 years when the two schools meet at The Pete.
The two teams have played twice in Biloxi, twice in Pensacola and once in Metairie over the last five meetings.
Nicholls (24-13) won the previous meeting this season 6-5 in 10 innings at Shuckers Ballpark in Biloxi. Basiel Williams lofted a two-run double in between three Southern Miss fielders in short left field to cap a three-run,
10-inning at Shuckers Ballpark.
The Golden Eagles, though, did not go quietly in the bottom of the 10th. Slade Wilks, who had a career-high four hits, and Carson Paetow collected consecutive singles to open the final frame. A walk then loaded the bases. After a strikeout, Dalton McIntyre singled in a run before Gabe Broadus knocked in a run with a groundout. Seth Smith then grounded out to second to end the game.
Southern Miss junior right-hander Drew Druckenmiller will get the call for the Golden Eagles. The Mobile, Ala., product got his first Southern Miss start last Tuesday at home against Southeastern Louisiana, giving up one run on two hits and two walks with five strikeouts, but did not figure in the decision. He has no record in 2024 with a 9.82 ERA. He has appeared in six games this season. His season highs for innings are 3 1/3 against Marist (2/18) and he has fanned five on two occasions.
Offensively, McIntyre leads the league with a batting average of .414. He had his season-high tying 10-game hitting streak snapped Saturday but has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games and is hitting .528 (28x53) over this this stretch with 13 runs, eight RBI, with three doubles and a home run.
The game can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network as well as at SouthernMiss.com.
