3/8/2024 8:17:00 PM | Women's Basketball
PENSACOLA, Fla. – James Madison used a 16-0 run in the first quarter to put the game out of reach five minutes in, ultimately hanging on to a 77-49 win over Southern Miss in the quarterfinals of the Hercules Tires Sun Belt Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.
James Madison (22-10, 13-5 Sun Belt) will advance to face the winner of tonight's game between Troy and Louisiana. The Lady Eagles' season finishes at 18-13 (10-8 Sun Belt) after the quarterfinal exit.
Southern Miss scored the first points of the game but the Dukes responded with a 16-0 run before the Lady Eagles could blink. James Madison held Southern Miss scoreless for over five minutes before Domonique Davis was able to hit a three to make it a 16-5 game. JMU held a 24-8 advantage after the first quarter while shooting 10-of-22 from the floor and holding Southern Miss to a 3-of-14 performance.
James Madison did not stop in the second quarter, pouring on another 20 in the frame to outscored Southern Miss 20-10 in the second quarter. At the half, JMU led the Lady Eagles 44-18. Southern Miss, though, made an outstanding effort heading into the final five minutes, holding James Madison to just two field goals. Nyla Jean (Tampa, Fla.) scored eight in the frame, including two shots from beyond the arc.
Without much positive momentum, Southern Miss returned from the locker room looking for a spark. It took some time, but the Lady Eagles did outscore the Dukes in the third frame, led again by Jean who scored another eight to put at 16 on the day—setting a new season-high and her most since scoring 19 against James Madison at Georgia State. The Lady Eagles made some headway down the stretch, but JMU's lead was insurmountable, allowing the Dukes to hold on to a 77-49 final.
Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) and Jean led Southern Miss with 18 points apiece but their 36 points were not enough to overcome 58 James Madison rebounds – the most allowed by a Lady Eagle opponent since allowing 51 against Cleveland State earlier this season.
Domonique Davis finishes with 1549 points as a Lady Eagle, passing Kendra Reed for the eighth-most points scored in a Lady Eagle career. Her 592 points this season are the fifth-most by any Lady Eagle in a single season.
