Down to just seven available players prior to tonight's tipoff, Southern Miss (19-13, 10-8 Sun Belt) needed near-perfect execution to compete in the WNIT. After winning the opening tip, Not much was going the Lady Eagles' way. UAB (18-14, 9-9 American) scored the game's first 11 points and led by as many as 13 in the first quarter five minutes into the game.
The double-digit lead was UAB's first of five leads by 10-or-more on the night, including a 58-48 lead going into the fourth quarter. Two Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) three-pointers cut the deficit to four at the end of the first quarter. Trailing 22-18, Southern Miss tied the game at the 7:39 mark of the second quarter and 24 all.
UAB responded with a 10-point run over the next three minutes to make it 34-24. The Lady Eagles were able to cut it to four again going into halftime, largely thanks to Davis' 16 first half points. Southern Miss once again made it a one-possession game throughout the early third quarter but the hot-shooting Blazers ran out to a 55-44 margin with 2:19 left in the third. A Southern Miss timeout stopped the bleeding, but UAB led by 12 with a minute left in the quarter.
However, the Lady Eagles had saved the best for last. Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) scored to tie the game at 65 with 5:43 left to play. Over the next two minutes, Southern Miss went on a 12-point run and held an 11-point lead with 2:21 left to play.
The 12 points were part of Southern Miss' 31-point fourth quarter as Grayson took over and scored 14 of her 26 points in the final 10 minutes of play. The Lady Eagles outscored UAB 31-16 in the fourth quarter and shot 13-of-20 from the floor for a 65 percent clip.
Davis and Grayson scored 26 and 22 points respectively and were joined in double figures by Jacorriah Bracey (Drew, Miss.), who added on 13. With 16 and 12 respective rebounds, Grayson and Bracey each collected double doubles to aid Southern Miss' 41-point day.
