
Softball Splits Opening Day of North Alabama Tournament

FLORENCE, Ala.-After starting the day with a loss in extra innings against Murray State, the Golden Eagles rebounded with a late comeback against North Alabama to split the opening day of the North Alabama Tournament in Florence, Ala.
Game One: Murray State 2- Southern Miss 0
The Golden Eagles and Racers were locked in a pitcher's duel Friday morning, as Southern Miss starter Marissa Frederick and Murray State's Jenna Veber worked through seven scoreless innings.Â
However, the Racers plated two runs in the eighth, with a runner advancing home from a throwing error and the next from an RBI bunt. Murray State then retired Southern Miss in order to decide the game 2-0.
The Golden Eagles outhit the Racers six to three, but were unable to convert with seven runners left on base.Â
Frederick received the loss, but shined in her second complete game of the season. The Lewes, Del. native allowed just three hits, one walk and no earned runs in a career-high eight innings pitched.
Starting at shortstop, senior Maria Smith earned a team-high two hits in the match. Mikaila Fox and Kinsley Gordon hit a pair of doubles against the Racers, while Hannah Borden and Lauren Lindsey and Mikaila Fox each singled.
Game Two: Southern Miss 9- North Alabama 5
Trailing through the majority of an afternoon contest versus North Alabama, Southern Miss mounted eight runs over the last two innings to complete a 9-5 comeback victory against the Lions.
Both teams finished the match with 11 hits, but the Golden Eagles produced eight timely hits that boosted the team in the final innings while the defense minimized North Alabama's offense.
The Lions initially took a one-run lead in the first and held the advantage until Carlee Durham found her way around the bases in the third inning. After hitting a single, Durham stole second and third base, setting up a sacrifice fly from Smith to tie the game.
BrookLynn White came in relief for starting pitcher Loganne Stepp in the bottom of the third. North Alabama knocked off two consecutive hits, scoring on a two-RBI double.Â
The Lions extended its lead in the fifth with another RBI single, but the Golden Eagles responded immediately at the top of the sixth as Borden hit a leadoff single.
Natalie Taylor then doubled to right field and Lindsey followed directly with a two-RBI double to narrow the lead. Gordon batted in the equalizing run with a sacrifice bunt. Southern Miss gained its first lead of the day as Smith hit an RBI single to send Ryanna Valdivia home and Gordon scored on the throw.Â
The Golden Eagles added insurance to their comeback lead as Taylor sent her first home run of the season over left field on a solo shot. Lindsey hit her second double of the game and Fox then singled to send the first baseman home. Gordon hit an RBI single for the team's final hit of the day.Â
The Lions added a final run, but two quick outs to second base and left field finished the match for a Southern Miss win.
