Game One: Samford 8- Southern Miss 6
While the Golden Eagles closely contested Samford in the teams' fourth match of the season between each other, the Bulldogs maintained a lead through the entire game to close out with an 8-6 victory to start Saturday's slate.
Samford held its lead from the top of the first, when the Bulldogs scored four runs thanks to a sacrifice fly and then a three-run home run from Grier Bruce.
Hannah Borden responded immediately in the following frame with a leadoff solo home run, which marked her fifth home run of the season.
After three walks to load the bases with no outs, Ryanna Valdivia hit an RBI single to left field. Kinsley Gordon narrowed Samford's lead to one with a sacrifice fly, but Jordyn Partain then stranded two Golden Eagles to protect the Bulldogs' lead.
Partain minimized Southern Miss' opportunities at-bat through the next three innings, as the Bulldogs added two more runs in the third from a two-run homer from Katie Campbell.
The Golden Eagles fought back in the fifth inning, as Natalie Taylor led off with a single to third base. After Lauren Lindsey drew a walk, Mikaila Fox doubled down right field to score Taylor. Southern Miss narrowed the lead to one again as Kayla Agner sent Lindsey home on a sacrifice fly.
Samford answered with two consecutive RBI singles in the sixth to add insurance to its lead in the sixth. Taylor chipped away at the three-run deficit with an RBI triple to score Maria Smith, but the Golden Eagles were unable to add anything else in the following inning.
Starting pitcher BrookLynn White received the loss in the game, throwing just over five innings, allowing four hits, eight earned runs and eight walks. Marissa Frederick pitched in relief after coming in during the top of the sixth.
Valdivia and Taylor led the Golden Eagles with a pair of hits each, and Lindsey drew a game-high two walks. With her homer in the first, Borden now trails Megan Hill's all-time program record for most career home runs by five shots.
Samford and Southern Miss split its four matches this season with two wins apiece.
Game Two: Southern Miss 10- Detroit Mercy 2
Trailing by one entering the fifth inning, Southern Miss found momentum at the plate, amassing a total of eight hits and nine runs that helped the Golden Eagles end the match in five innings at 10-2.
Southern Miss jumped to an early lead in the first as Taylor scored on an error, but Detroit Mercy's Alexis Hoff gave the Titans a 2-1 advantage with a two RBI double in the bottom of th second.Â
Frederick retired the Titans in order for the next two innings, but the Golden Eagles struggled to develop a rhythm offensively until the fifth inning, when Caroline Worrell started the frame with a walk and Borden soon followed with a single.
Taylor sent both home on a double, and Fox batted in the right fielder with a single down left field. With the bases loaded from Carlee Durham's single, Fox scored on a wild pitch.
Gaining steam, Southern Miss knocked off four consecutive hits, starting with two RBI singles from Gordon and Worrell. Smith drove in two runs with a triple and Borden closed the scoring spurt with an RBI single down the left field line.
The Titans got one hit in the bottom of the fifth, but a final throw from Smith to Gordon at second base ended the game.
