HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss men's tennis will face its toughest test on Thursday as it travels to No. 33 Central Florida. The Golden Eagles (5-3, 1-0 Sun Belt) will take on the Knights (13-1, 0-0 Big 12) from the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. at 4 p.m CST.
"This is a great opportunity for the team as we inch closer to conference play," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "UCF is a ranked opponent that has played a tough schedule and has been battle tested. I am excited for our guys to play competition of this level."
Southern Miss has won five of its last six matches, including a Sun Belt win over Coastal Carolina on March 5. Most recently, the Golden Eagles edged Tennessee State in Hattiesburg, 4-3. Olimjon Nabiev picked up his team-leading sixth singles win of the season in the win over the Tigers last Sunday. Freshman Henry Lamchinniah has racked up a 5-1 record in his rookie campaign and Olle Noltorp – another freshman – is 4-1 early in the season.
The Knights host Southern Miss in the midst of a six-match winning streak that includes wins over UAB, South Florida, Penn, South Alabama, Wichita State and Tulsa. UCF's lone loss was a 6-1 defeat to No. 25 Florida on the road. The remaining Knight wins have been over the likes of UNC Wilmington, Coastal Carolina, North Florida, Georgia Southern, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida Atlantic and Miami.
Thursday's match is the fourth all-time between the two teams and the first since the 2009 season. UCF has won all three matches, with the most recent being a 4-3 win in Hattiesburg.
