SAN MARCOS, Texas – Jordan Mason scored 10 of Texas State's last 12 points over the final four-plus minutes to ruin a late Golden Eagle comeback in leading the Bobcats to a 60-55 Sun Belt Conference victory over Southern Miss Saturday afternoon at Strahan Arena.
The game concluded a four-game road swing for the Golden Eagles (12-11 overall, 6-5 Sun Belt) as the squad lost the final three contests of the trip.
Austin Crowley led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 16 points, while Mo Arnold added 14, Victory Iwuakor 11 and Cobie Montgomery 10.
Southern Miss rallied from seven points down at halftime, 31-24. Before the comeback, though, the Bobcat lead ballooned to 11 points following a Davion Sykes jumper with 17:54 remaining to make the score 37-26.
The visitors then outscored the Bobcats 20-9 over the next 10-plus minutes and tied the score 46-46 with 7:28 remaining on a Montgomery 3-pointer. Southern Miss tied the game again at 54-54 with 1:49 left on a Crowley 3-pointer, but Jordan hit a bucket the next trip down the floor for Texas State and the Bobcats outscored the Golden Eagles 6-1 the rest of the way.
Along with Mason's 15 points, Brandon Love added 15 for Texas State and Sykes poured in 12.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the game and held an advantage of seven points on four different occasions, including a 17-10 ledger following a pair of Iwuakor free throws with 8:39 left in the opening half.
Southern Miss, which finished the game connecting on 16-of-49 shots (32.7 percent) missed 10 consecutive shots in the first half at one point and converted two of its final 16 field goal attempts over the first 20 minutes.
That ineffectiveness shooting allowed the home squad to get back into the contest as Texas State (9-14, 3-8) scored the final six point over the final 1:29 of the first half to take their seven-point halftime advantage.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they return to action for the first of six-straight home contests, starting Wednesday against Old Dominion. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
