Golden Eagles Finish Fifth in Both Men and Women Title Races at SBC Championships

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Three Southern Miss first-place triumphs highlighted the second and final day of the Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships, Tuesday, at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.
The Golden Eagles finished in fifth place in both the men's and women's final standings. The men accumulated 84 points, while the women tallied 59.5. Both teams improved on their final standings from the previous season.
On this day, Southern Miss excelled in the sprint events.
The team swept the 60 meters races as Kingsley Unorji won the men's division with a 6.70, while Trinity Benson won the women's race with a personal best 7.38. Benson led the women's team by scoring in three events, including a third place in the 400 meters with a 55.622 as well as a leg in the 4x400 meter relay team – along with Addison McLaurin, Trinity Flagler and Savi'a Varnell – which ended in third place with a 3:44.84.
Zayne Palomino won the only field event for the Golden Eagles in the men's high jump with a personal best 2.20 meters. He was one of 11 scoring opportunities for the men in the meet. The women enjoyed 10 scoring chances in their finish.
Four different Golden Eagles scored in a pair of events, including Jada McDougle, who was third in the 60 meters race with a personal best 7.40, while finishing fourth in the 200 meters with a personal best 23.91. Savi'a Varnell, who was a part of the 4x400 relay team, also collected fourth in the 400 meters with a 55.628. Trinity Flagler, also a leg in the 4x400 women's relay, finished eighth in the 60 meters with a 7.58.
On the men's side, Maxiumus Littleton finished sixth in the high jump (2.02 meters PB) and seventh in the triple jump (14.03 meters).
Other top three finishers for the Golden Eagles included Za'Isha Fisher, who placed second in the women's triple jump with a personal best 12.95, while Kelvin Chiku (1:53.22 PB) placed second in the men's 800 meters. Omar Austin enjoyed third place in the men's 400 meters with a time of 47.71.
Arkansas State won both the men's and women's team championships.
