Women's Tennis Tops Belmont Before Falling at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southern Miss women's tennis team played a pair of non-conference matches in Birmingham, Ala. against Belmont and Samford. The Golden Eagles started the trip with a 4-3 win over Belmont (4-3) on Sunday afternoon and then fell 4-0 to Samford (3-2) on Monday afternoon.
The Bruins got off to a quick start by taking the doubles point with wins on court one and two. Singles play, though, was where Southern Miss stormed back. Suhana Das swayed the momentum with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court three, then Angelina Blinova picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win on court five. Sophomore Malannia Vashkevich knocked off Libbie Hamilton, 7-5, 6-3 to help the Golden Eagles secure a win. Both Hannah Chambers won by retirement in the second set on court three.
Again Samford, Zenn Lim and Das picked up a win for Southern Miss in doubles play on court two. However, the Bulldogs won two tight matches on the other to courts to secure the doubles point. In singles play, Samford picked up wins on court one, two and three to secure the win.
The Golden Eagles are back in action on Feb. 16 at New Orleans. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
