NEW ORLEANS, La. – Tulane (5-6, 0-0 American) took advantage of Southern Miss' (4-5, 0-0 Sun Belt) scoring troubles on Tuesday night as the Green Wave ran to an 86-58 win at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start thanks to a Christian Watson three-pointer and DeAntoni Gordon layup on the first two offensive possessions of the game. Tulane chipped away at the Golden Eagle lead, using a 10-0 run to take a five-point lead.
Gordon got it back to a one-point game after a slick jumper and a one-handed dunk, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get the remainder of the game. The Green Wave went on to outscore the Golden Eagles 28-14 over the final 14 minutes of the first half. Southern Miss went the remainder of the half without stringing together consecutive baskets, while Tulane used a trio of 5-0 runs to take control.
Southern Miss cut it to 11 to open the second half after a six-point scoring spurt. A Kaleb Banks jumper started a good stretch for the Tulane offense as its lead jumped to 30 with five minutes left. The Golden Eagles went from 15:28 to 10:13 without a field goal and then had another six-minute drought without a field goal.
The Green Waved handed Southern Miss a 28-point loss when it was all said and done. Denijay Harris led the way with 12 points after being named Sun Belt Player of the Week earlier in the day. The forward also led the Golden Eagles in rebounding with nine boards.
Gordon finished with 10 points to put his all-time number of the double figures scoring games at 50 for his career. Jose Benitez played a career-high 20 minutes after having to fill the point guard role after Neftali Alvarez had to check out in the first half.
The Golden Eagles shot 37 percent from the floor, while Tulane finished with a 49 percent clip. Southern Miss knocked down at least eight three-pointers for the sixth time this season. Southern Miss also outrebounded Tulane, 36-31.
Southern Miss will now get ready to play No. 18 Ole Miss on Saturday, Dec. 14. The game is at 3 p.m. at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss.
