HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team concludes its 108th football season this weekend when they travel to face Troy for a 1 p.m., contest Saturday, Nov. 30, at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Troy, Ala.
The game can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network and through SouthernMiss.com.
The Golden Eagles (1-10 overall, 0-7 Sun Belt) look to snap a nine-game losing streak when they meet the Trojans (3-8, 2-5) in both team's season finale.
This contest marks the 14th meeting between the two schools with the Golden Eagles holding an 8-5 advantage, despite losing the last three games in the series. The series dates back to 1935, but six of the games have been played since 2008 when Southern Miss upended the Trojans 30-27 in overtime on a Michael McGee blocked field goal in the New Orleans Bowl.
"We are playing for pride right now," said Southern Miss interim coach Reed Stringer in his media availability earlier this week. "We have been playing a little bit better, a little bit smarter, a little bit cleaner, but it still has not been good enough. I do see improvement and I told the guys 'as long as you keep playing hard and playing for each other, good things are going to start happening for us.' We are excited about this opportunity."
Southern Miss has improved its rushing offense over the second half of the campaign, gaining at least 100 yards in each of the last six games. The Golden Eagles are averaging 150.8 yards per game during that span.
Graduate student Dreke Clark registered the team's first 100-yard rushing performance of the year last week versus South Alabama with 115 yards on 12 carries. Clark leads the team in 2024 in rushing yards with 583. Kenyon Clay ranks second with 386 yards in 2024 and a team-best six rushing scores.
On the defensive side, Tre' Pinkney continues to lead the Golden Eagle tacklers this season with 69. Defensive lineman Brodarius Lewis is coming off his best game of his career with a career-high seven tackles which included career-best for both sacks (two) and tackles for loss (2.5).
The special teams duo of Bryce Lofton and Connor Gibbs also continue to contribute to the team's cause. Lofton averages 45.0 yards per punt over 56 tries. His punting average ranks first in the Sun Belt as well as his number of 50-plus yard punts (17).
Gibbs became the first Golden Eagle last weekend to kick at least three 50-plus yard field goals as he hit a 59-yarder right at the end of the half. The make marked the longest field goal in M.M. Roberts Stadium history and second longest ever made by a player in the program.
The Troy game concludes the third season in the Sun Belt Conference for the Golden Eagles in football.
