Southern Miss Falls in Three Sets to Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Southern Miss volleyball fell in a three-set match against Marshall on Friday night at the Cam Henderson Center. Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles showcased standout efforts in blocking, serving, and defensive plays.
Southern Miss opened the match with Aysu Dalogullari landing a kill off Hayden Riddle to take an early 1-0 lead. Marshall fought back for the tie, but Lillie Johnson followed with a service ace to push the score to 7-5. Torrey Tkach delivered a timely solo block, keeping the Golden Eagles ahead 8-6. However, Marshall responded with a series of kills and errors from Southern Miss, flipping the score to 16-15. The Golden Eagles stayed within reach with kills from Johnson and Sadie McAda until Marshall closed on a 5-1 run to take the set 25-20.
Madison Baldridge teamed up with Francesca Panunzio for a block assist, helping Southern Miss narrow the score to 9-8 early in the second set. Sunni Sheppard's service ace later tied the set at 20-20, but Marshall regained control with a decisive 5-1 run to claim the set 25-21. Sheppard's six digs during the frame were pivotal in keeping The Herd from scoring.
Southern Miss relied on key plays from its leaders in the final set. A kill by Izzy Kronenberg trimmed the deficit to 8-7, while Johnson's solo block tied the score at 21-21. Dalogullari added another crucial kill, but Marshall's offense proved too strong, closing the set on a 4-1 run to win 25-22 to secure the match. McAda led the match with 15 kills, while Sheppard led the back row with 20 digs. Panunzio and Tkach added two blocks, while Panunzio also led the Golden Eagles with 26 assists.
Southern Miss falls to 9-19 (5-10 SBC), while The Herd improves to 15-14 (6-10).
