FOLEY, Ala. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles dropped a hard-fought 3-1 match to Coastal Carolina in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship Thursday evening. Despite showing resilience and posting a dominant third set, the Chanticleers' consistent pressure ultimately secured their victory.
Set one began with both teams trading points early. Coastal Carolina broke away with a four-point run to lead 12-8, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 6-0 streak highlighted by kills from Aysu Dalogullari and Madison Baldridge and a service ace by Sadie McAda, tying the score at 19-19. Despite the momentum shift, Southern Miss struggled to close out the set, as Coastal capitalized on an attack error to take it 25-21.
Southern Miss opened the second set strong, fueled by kills from McAda and a block by Torrey Tkach to tie the score at 9-9. The Golden Eagles built on this, posting a five-point run to lead 11-10 after back-to-back kills from Dalogullari. However, Coastal Carolina's offense pushed forward, reclaiming the lead with a 5-1 run and eventually clinching the set 25-21 with a kill.
Needing to stay alive in the third set, Southern Miss found their rhythm. The Golden Eagles used a 5-0 run, with two kills from McAda, to lead 14-11. Strong defensive plays, including a block from Tkach, allowed Southern Miss to maintain the advantage and take the set 25-20 on a Coastal Carolina blocking error.
Coastal Carolina jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the fourth set, leaving the Golden Eagles struggling to regain footing. Southern Miss put up a valiant effort, with Dalogullari and Tkach contributing key kills, but the Chanticleers closed out the set 25-14 and secured the match.
McAda and Dalogullari both recorded 12 kills to lead the Golden Eagles offensively, while Tkach posted five blocks. McAda also contributed from the service line with two aces. Francesca Panunzio led with 25 assists, while Izzy Kronenberg led the match with 15 digs.
