
Panunzio Earns 1,000th Assist as Golden Eagles Take Down Old Dominion

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Francesca Panunzio recorded her 1,000th career assist as Southern Miss defeated Old Dominion in a thrilling four-set match. She finished with 20 assists.
Set one opened with both teams trading points early at 2-2, with a kill each from Sadie McAda and Aysu Dalogullari. Old Dominion took a 6-3 lead, but Southern Miss responded with kills from McAda and Torrey Tkach, closing in at 7-5. After a Monarch block, the Golden Eagles countered with a block from Tkach and Panunzio, along with kills by Dalogullari and Lillie Johnson, tying the score at 9-9. Though Old Dominion earned a pair of kills, the Golden Eagles went on a 6-1 run with kills from Dalogullari, Madison Baldridge, and a block by Johnson, taking the lead 15-12. With Old Dominion swinging hard, two back-to-back blocks by McAda and Tkach, paired with a service ace by Johnson, extended the Golden Eagles' lead to 20-14. The Monarchs then rallied with an 11-3 run to steal the set 25-23.
Southern Miss rebounded in set two, capitalizing on Monarch errors, scoring a kill by Baldridge, and earning back-to-back aces by Johnson to take a 5-2 lead. Old Dominion scored in a 4-0 run to keep it close, but a block by Tkach and McAda, along with another kill from Dalogullari, kept the Monarchs at bay, 7-6. The teams continued trading points until a kill from Panunzio tied it at 10-10; she also earned her 1,000th career assist on a kill by Dalogullari. Old Dominion earned defensive points and a service ace to go up 14-11, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 6-1 run, including three blocks and an ace from Kaylee Lowther, to take the lead 17-15. The Monarchs gained the advantage again, 19-18, with an ace and blocks, but Southern Miss quickly responded with a kill by Panunzio and an ace from Sunni Sheppard, along with Monarch errors, to take the set 27-25.
With both teams tied at one set each, the Golden Eagles increased their intensity. After an early tie at 4-4, the Golden Eagles strung together a 7-1 run to lead 11-5 with kills and a block from Tkach and Panunzio. Although Old Dominion earned a kill, Baldridge and Dalogullari contributed kills in a four-point run, keeping the lead at 15-6. With kills from Dalogullari and McAda, the Golden Eagles maintained their energy, advancing to 20-12. The Monarchs attempted a rally, but defensive plays by Sheppard and McAda kept them at bay. The Golden Eagles capitalized with an overpass kill from Johnson to take the set 25-13.
Carrying momentum into the fourth set, the Golden Eagles got kills from McAda and Johnson to hold a 6-5 lead. Old Dominion responded to tie the set at 10-10, but Tkach and Baldridge's kills and blocks regained the lead for Southern Miss at 16-13. Although the Monarchs tried to close the gap with a 6-1 run, a diving save by Dalogullari set up Tkach for the winning kill, securing the set 25-23 and the match.
Dalogullari led with 19 kills, while Johnson tallied three service aces. Defensively, McAda recorded 20 digs, and Tkach finished with eight blocks.
Southern Miss advances to 9-13 (5-5 SBC), while Old Dominion drops to 15-6 (4-4 SBC).
The Golden Eagles head to San Marcos, Texas, to face Texas State on Friday, November 1, at 6 p.m. and Saturday, November 2, at 2 p.m.
