
Volleyball Falls to Old Dominion

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss volleyball fell to Old Dominion on Friday night at the Wellness Center in three sets. Aysu Dalogullari led both teams with 10 kills.
The first set began with both teams trading points to tie at 5-5. The Monarchs gained momentum with a 5-1 run, advancing to 10-6. A kill by Dalogullari and back-to-back blocks from Madison Baldridge, Izzy Kronenberg, and Dalogullari brought the Golden Eagles within 11-9. After trading errors and adding a kill each from Kronenberg, Sadie McAda, and Torrey Tkach, Old Dominion held a two-point lead at 18-16. Although Baldridge and Kronenberg contributed kills late in the set, Old Dominion maintained its lead, taking the first set 25-20.
Continuing their momentum in the second set, Old Dominion went on a 4-1 run. Southern Miss responded with kills from Tkach and McAda and a service ace from Sunni Sheppard, sparking a 6-1 run to lead 7-5. The Monarchs then surged back, recording a service ace and kills to reclaim the lead at 12-9. Both teams battled closely, with Old Dominion maintaining a 20-14 lead. Despite kills from Tkach, McAda, and Dalogullari, Old Dominion closed out the set 25-17.
The third set opened with a Monarch error and another service ace from Sheppard, giving Southern Miss a 2-0 start. Old Dominion tied the set at 3-3. Southern Miss capitalized on Monarch errors and a service ace from Lindsey Smith to lead 10-5. However, Old Dominion countered with a service ace and a 4-0 run, narrowing the gap to 10-9. The Monarchs later posted a 5-1 run, but a block from McAda and Baldridge halted their momentum at 14-12. The teams traded points until a 17-17 tie. Southern Miss pulled ahead with kills by Dalogullari and Francesca Panunzio to lead 23-19, but Old Dominion rallied with service aces and kills for a 7-1 run, winning the set 26-24 to complete the 3-0 sweep.
Dalogullari led the match with 10 kills, while Hayden Riddle recorded 16 assists. Baldridge contributed three blocks, and Sheppard added nine digs and two service aces.
Southern Miss fell to 8-13 (4-5 SBC), while Old Dominion improved to 15-5 (4-3 SBC). Southern Miss currently sits fourth in the West Division, with Old Dominion in fifth place in the East.
The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday at 12 p.m. against the Monarchs to close out the two-match series.
