HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Trailing by two goals with five minutes remaining in Thursday's match against Marshall (3-5-3, 1-2-2 Sun Belt), Southern Miss Soccer (1-6-3, 0-2-3 Sun Belt) rallied to even the score at 3-3 and earn a conference point.
While the Golden Eagles fell to a two-score deficit, sophomore Rebeka Vega closed the gap in the 85th minute, striking the ball for her second goal of the season, assisted from a corner cross by Adaira Nakano.
As Southern Miss rushed for another opportunity with a minute remaining, Marshall goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth deflected a shot from Raquelle Mitchell, sending the ball back into play in a crowded box. Redshirt junior Alice Williamson stepped up, sending the ball into the back of the net for the equalizer with 53 seconds left.
Before Thursday's match against the Herd, the Golden Eagles had just two second-half goals this season, which both came in their 5-0 season-opener win against Mississippi Valley State. After playing through eight games without a goal in the second half, Vega and Williamson delivered two to pick up a point in conference standings.
Mitchell scored the first goal of the game for the Golden Eagles in the 19th minute, which was also assisted by Nakano, who registered her first multi-assist game of her career.
Mitchell also scored in her second consecutive game, bringing her season total to a team-high four goals, which marks the most by a Golden Eagle freshman in the first ten games of the season since 2021.
Marshall's Ami Komori tied the match shortly following Mitchell's first goal on a deep shot and then assisted a late strike from Brooklyn McComas in the 41st minute to take the advantage.
Bailey Fisher rounded out the Herd's scoring for the evening on a shot sent to the top right of the goal, assisted on a pass by Rylie McKinney.
Southern Miss stayed persistent on the attack throughout the match, outshooting Marshall 17-11 on the way to its comeback.
All of Southern Miss' 12 home games since joining the Sun Belt have been decided by a draw or one goal, with the Golden Eagles holding a 3-4-6 home record in the conference.
