HUNTINGTON, W.V. – Southern Miss (12-9, 6-3 Sun Belt) fell 83-67 to a hot-shooting Marshall (11-11, 6-3 Sun Belt) team on Saturday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd snapped Southern Miss' three-game winning streak as they shot 56.4 percent from the floor and 63 percent in the first half. Southern Miss also held a hot hand as it shot 47.1 percent from the floor – it's 10th game shooting the ball over 45 percent this season.
Cobie Montgomery set a career-high in three-pointers made with five and tied his previous best in scoring with 17 points. Austin Crowley paced the Golden Eagles in the scoring column with 18.
Southern Miss battled back from down 25 in the second half and cut it to a 12-point ball game thanks to a 13-0 run in a three-minute span. Montgomery splashed three triples during the run and Victor Iwuakor added a pair of field goals. The senior big man finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Marshall was able to silence the Golden Eagle run with a Kamdyn Curfman three and a Nate Martin and-one that built the Herd advantage back to 18. Southern Miss used an 8-1 run to make it a 10-point game – the closest margin in nearly a 12-minute span – with 2:30 to play.
The Thundering Herd had an answer as they went on to finish the game on a 6-0 run that ended Southern Miss' comeback attempt. The Herd were led by Martin' game-high 24 points and Curfman's 21 points. Curfman went 4-for-11 from deep to help Marshall hit eight triples.
Donovan Ivory added 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Southern Miss went 10-for-25 from deep and have now hit 10-plus three-points in three consecutive games. Crowley hit three from deep and Ivory had two.
Southern Miss continues its four-game road trip on Wednesday at Arkansas State. Tip-off in Jonesboro is slated for 7:30 p.m. CST.
