Men's Basketball Suffers Road Loss at Troy

TROY, Ala. – Troy (11-6, 5-0 Sun Belt) remained unbeaten in Sun Belt men's basketball play as it picked up an 82-56 win over Southern Miss (9-8, 3-2 Sun Belt) on Saturday at Trojan Arena.
Austin Crowley led the Golden Eagles in scoring for the sixth time this season after going for 14 points today. The Golden Eagles got off to a promising start after taking the lead eight minutes into the ballgame thanks to a 7-1 run.
Despite the run, it didn't provide enough scoring as the Trojans finished the half on a 20-8 run that gave Troy a 14-point lead at the half. The Trojan lead carried into the second half as it turned into a 22-point game three minutes into the final 20 minutes of action. Southern Miss used a 9-0 run to cut it 12, but a Golden Eagle turnover and foul shifted the momentum back to Troy.
The Trojans regained control and went on an 11-2 run to but the game out of reach. A Christyon Eugene three-pointer put Troy up 21 6:20 to play. That's all the Trojans needed as they went on to win by 26 in a key Sun Belt game.
Southern Miss shot 33.9 percent from the floor and went 4-for-19 from deep. On the flip, Troy cashed in on nine three-pointers and shot the at a 41.9 percent clip – its season average was 44 percent heading into the game.
Victor Iwuakor finished in double figures with 11 points before fouling out late in the game. The Abuja, Nigeria native grabbed four rebounds and blocked two shots. Cobie Montgomery earned his first start of his career and answered by connecting on a pair of three-pointers before finishing with eight points.
Southern Miss will return to Hattiesburg on Wednesday night to host Arkansas State at Reed Green Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
