HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team returns home for the first of two-straight Sun Belt Conference home games when they play host to Texas State, Saturday, at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
Game time will be 6 p.m. and can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network. Tickets are still available for purchase by going to SouthernMissTickets.com.
The game marks the fourth matchup between the two schools with the visiting team winning all three previous meetings. Last season, Zach Wilcke hit Chandler Pittman for a 53-yard, game-winning throw with 32 seconds remaining in the two squads first meeting conference foes at Bobcat Stadium.
The Golden Eagles also won in San Marcos in 2015 behind 230 rushing yards and four touchdowns from Jalen Richard in a 56-50 offensive shootout. The initial game in the series served as the 2013 campaign opener. A late Texas State touchdown in that affair lifted the visiting Bobcats to a 22-15 decision.
Heading into this contest, the Golden Eagles look to snap a three-game losing streak after dropping a 44-37 decision at Arkansas State last weekend.
Frank Gore, Jr., registered the team's first 100-yard rushing game of the year with 132 yards on 20 carries, which also propelled him over the 3,000-yard mark on the ground. He became only the sixth Golden Eagle player in history to accomplish this feat and now has 3,099 yards, trailing Sammy Winder (1978-81) by 15 yards to tie for No. 5 on the school's career rushing chart.
Quarterback Billy Wiles notched his second 200-yard passing game of the year against the Red Wolves, throwing for 215 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Golden Eagles went over 400 yards of total offense for the second time in 2023.
Jakarius Caston and Latreal Jones were two big targets for Wiles as he hit them for 65 and 63 yards, respectively, last weekend as each also added a touchdown catch.
On defense, Southern Miss recorded a season-best four sacks as Ja'Len Sims and Markel McLaurin were each in on their first ones as Golden Eagles. Dylan Lawrence posted a season-high 11 tackles (five solo) against the Red Wolves. For the season, Lawrence leads the way with 26 with Jay Stanley next at 24.
Texas State enters the game having posted a 3-1 record, including a 35-24 win at home last weekend against Nevada.
Following the Texas State contest, the Golden Eagles return home next weekend to face Old Dominion. It will be homecoming on the Golden Eagle campus as game time is set for 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7.
