HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Year two of Sun Belt Conference play gets underway for Southern Miss this weekend when they travel to Jonesboro to face Arkansas State.
Game time is set for 6 p.m., from Centennial Bank Stadium and the contest can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The Golden Eagles (1-2) look to snap a two-game losing streak against a team they defeated 20-19 last season in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss, which has won the last seven games in the series and leads overall 10-2, got fourth quarter rushing scores from Frank Gore, Jr., and Janari Dean to overcome a 19-7 deficit in the contest.
Southern Miss makes its first trip to Jonesboro since 2008 and only the six overall trip to the state of Arkansas in its football history. The last time the Golden Eagles ventured to the Natural State, they faced off with Arkansas in 2013, falling 24-3.
The Golden Eagles hold a 3-1 advantage over the Red Wolves in Arkansas, winning two of three contests in Jonesboro, including the 2008 game, 27-24, in Larry Fedora's first season with the program. Southern Miss also registered a 21-6 triumph over A-State in Little Rock during the 1978 campaign.
A-State (1-2) recorded its first victory of 2023 last weekend with a 31-7 win at home over Stony Brook. This came after a 73-0 loss at Oklahoma and a 37-3 setback at home to Memphis.
Southern Miss redshirt sophomore quarterback Billy Wiles is expected to start his fourth-straight game for the Golden Eagles as he has thrown for 598 yards over his first three starts on 51-of-95 passes and three touchdowns. His two biggest targets have been Latreal Jones, who has caught a team-high 10 passes for 114 yards, while Jakarius Caston has nine catches for a team-best 181 yards and a touchdown grab.
Dreke Clark leads the Golden Eagles in the ground game with 157 yards, while Frank Gore, Jr., is next at 76.
Defensively, Jay Stanley leads Southern Miss with 20 tackles to go along with two interceptions and a forced fumble this season. Defensive back Dylan Lawrence is next with 15 stops, while defensive lineman Jalen Williams is third on the team in tackles with 12.
Following the A-State contest, the Golden Eagles return home for the first of two-straight home league contests when they entertain Texas State, Saturday, Sept. 30, at 6 p.m.
