HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss Soccer team (2-2-0, 0-0-0 SBC) is set to face No. 22 Georgia (1-1-1) this Sunday at the Turner Soccer Complex in Athens, GA. This marks the first-ever meeting between these two teams.
Last time out: The Golden Eagles are coming off a 3-0 win over Northwestern State, putting them 2-2 for the season. The Golden Eagles did not waste any time making offensive attempts within the first minutes of play. One shot found its mark as midfielder Adaira Nakano scored the match's first goal, marking her second career goal and putting her at the forefront of the team regarding points, goals, assists, and game-winning goals.
In the 79th minute, freshman Chloe Taylor extended the lead with a goal assisted by Nakano from outside the box. This marked Taylor's first goal of the season and her collegiate career. As the game neared its end, forward Parker Martin scored the third and final goal in the last ten seconds, assisted by Esmeralda Figueroa. This was Martin's second goal of the season and her career. The night's final goal was the first time the Golden Eagles had scored a goal 80:00 or later since 2022 with their matchup against Coastal Carolina, where they scored a goal in the 86th minute to deny the shutout. Alex Helbling also secured her sixth career shutout between the sticks, placing her sixth in the school's history. She made four saves while facing five shots.
Scouting Georgia: Georgia entered the weekend with a 1-1-1 overall record following a scoreless draw against Minnesota Thursday. Georgia's defense was impressive, limiting Minnesota from capitalizing on any opportunities and allowing them just four shots. In contrast, the Bulldogs dominated with 20 shots, including eight on target. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Brown achieved her sixth career shutout, while graduate forward Hannah White played a pivotal role in the Georgia offense with six shots. Notably, White leads Georgia in four key categories: goals, shots on goal, points, and game-winning goals. The Bulldogs are guided by their second-year head coach, Keidane McAlpine.Â
The match between Southern Miss and Georgia is scheduled for noon at the Turner Soccer Complex, with streaming available on SECN+, and live stats will be accessible here.
