Soccer Opens Conference Play Against South Alabama

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss Women's Soccer team (3-4-0,0-0-0 SBC) opens Sun Belt play this Sunday at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex against South Alabama (7-0-1, 0-0-0 SBC) at 1 p.m.
In the historical series dating back to 1997, South Alabama has the upper hand with a 13-4 record. Last season, the two teams clashed in Mobile, resulting in a dominant 8-1 victory for the Jags, with Bernadett Stefan scoring a goal to prevent a complete shutout. Southern Miss has a 4-4 record when playing at home, with their most recent home win (1-0) in Hattiesburg occurring two seasons ago.
Last time out: Southern Miss dominated play against Nicholls State, scoring four goals in the first 20 minutes. Adaira Nakano and Chloe Taylor contributed goals early, with Nakano scoring twice in the first half. Brooke Amos added another goal, giving them a 4-0 lead by halftime. In the second half, Tay Collum scored unassisted for her first collegiate goal, and Nakano completed a hat trick after converting a penalty kick to end the afternoon in a 6-0 shutout. Defensively, Southern Miss allowed Nicholls only three shots, with goalkeepers Alex Helbling and Maddie Ellis making a save each.
Scouting South Alabama: The Jaguars remain undefeated as they secured a 3-0 victory over UAB on September 10th. In the first half, the Jags dominated offensively with nine shots compared to UAB's one. Chiara Singarella netted an assist from Gracie Wilson, giving them a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. South Alabama applied pressure in the second half, adding seven more shots while limiting UAB to four. In the 59th minute, Gabby Hollar headed in a goal from Singarella's assist. Hollar leads the team with six goals this season. Wilson added the third goal in the 81st minute with an assist from Kailey Littleford for the 3-0 win. Keeper Jaidy Gutierrez Campos earned another clean sheet, her fourth of the season and the team's fifth. She faced five shots and made one save.Â
The Jaguars' only non-conference tie came from a 1-1 draw against Mississippi State. Head coach Richard Moodie leads South Alabama, and they've had two players named offensive players of the week this season, namely Jasmine Greene and Gabby Hollar. South Alabama was predicted to tie for first place in the preseason coaches poll.
Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex and the event will be streamed on ESPN+, and live stats will be available here.
