Women's Tennis in Finals at NSU Collegiate Invite

NATCHITOCHES, La.--The Southern Miss women's tennis team had a remarkable opening day at the Women's Care Lady Demon Collegiate Invite, hosted by Northwestern State Friday, advancing to the finals.
"Great start for our team to make the finals in our opening fall invitational. The focus has been on good execution, and everyone on the team rose to the occasion against some strong competition," said head coach Piyanart Engineer.
In the yellow singles draw, newcomer Angelina Blinova secured her spot in the championships on Saturday morning by defeating Maike Tiemersma of Tyler Junior College and Elena Rubo of Lamar in a challenging three-set match, with scores of 6-3, 5-7, and 10-5.
Freshman Gabriella Danielsson faced a setback in the orange singles draw against Sara Erenda from the host team but bounced back with a victory over Boglarka Csordas of Southeastern Louisiana, earning her a place in the consolation final scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow.
Although the doubles team of Blinova and Danielsson faced defeat against Garcia and Erenda of Northwestern State, Zenn Lim and Suhana Das secured a win against Tyler Junior College with a score of 7-6 (4) in the purple doubles draw. They are set to compete against Southeastern's doubles pair on Saturday morning.
Das experienced a loss against Candy Wai of Tyler Junior College but redeemed herself with a win against Kate Oborina of SLU in the purple singles draw, placing her in the consolation final against Leah Kuruvilla of Lamar.
Lim showcased an impressive start to the team's fall season, securing a hard-fought victory with scores of 4-6, 7-6, (6) (8) against Zoi Spyro of Tyler Junior College, and a narrow win against Ayu Ishibashi of Northwestern State with scores of 7-5, 6-0, and 13-11.
The Golden Eagles will continue their competition on day two of the Women's Care Lady Demon Collegiate Invite on Saturday morning at the Jack Fisher Complex.
