OXFORD, Miss.- The Southern Miss Soccer team opened their 2023 season in Oxford, Miss falling to Ole Miss 2-0 on the road.
"We showed bravery and patience that I haven't seen in how we played tonight," said head coach Mohammed El-Zare. "We generated enough opportunities to achieve our desired outcome, and the experience served as a valuable lesson for personal growth and development. I am incredibly proud of this group and the unity they are demonstrating. We will get back on the field tomorrow and get better."
Ole Miss secured their victory when they received their first goal of the evening from freshman forward Evie Ewing, who shattered the deadlock in the 50th minute with a well-placed shot from her right foot that found the bottom right corner of the net and added to their lead.
Later, senior forward Kelly Brady converted a penalty kick, placing the ball into the top right corner of the net 20 minutes before the end of the period. The Black and Gold made several crosses inside the box in the last few minutes of the frame but could not add to the tally. SEC preseason watch list member Shu Oba recorded the shutout for Ole Miss making three saves in goal.
Although the Rebels had an eight-shot advantage, our newcomers Emilie Torres, Marissa House, and Chloe Taylor took charge and attempted a total of five shots, three of which were on target.
Next up: The Golden Eagles will head to Baton Rouge for a late afternoon matchup against LSU on Sunday. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m., and the event will be live-streamed on SECN+.
