HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Â The Southern Miss softball team (20-22, 4-16 Sun Belt) is on the road for their last regular season series against Georgia State (17-33, 6-15 Sun Belt) in Atlanta, Ga., at the Bob Heck Softball Complex on May 4-6.
Last time outÂ
The Southern Miss Softball team closed their final home series against South Alabama Sunday with a doubleheader. The Golden Eagles fell 4-1 in game one and 11-0 in game two at the Southern Miss Softball Complex on April 30.Â
Both teams were forced into extra innings in game one, as the scoring started in the eighth inning. South Alabama pushed across four after two doubles and a fielding error to break the scoreless game. The first time the Golden Eagles had multiple runners on the bases came in their half of the eighth, Scout Jennings reached first on an error, and Maddie Moody came up to pinch hit and sent her second hit of the year through the right side. Southern Miss refused the shutout as Hannah Borden reached first on a throwing error bringing Scout Jennings home. Notably, hits in game one came from our leadoff batters. Morgan Leinstock (11-14) was credited for the loss in eight innings; she allowed ten hits, struck out four, and issued no walks.Â
In game two, South Alabama scored in every inning, racking up 11 runs and closing the game to a run-rule decision. The Golden Eagles had few scoring opportunities, only recording one hit. Jana Lee (3-5) tagged the loss starting us off in the circle allowing seven hits, and issued two walks before Paige Kilgore came in for the relief.Â
Scouting the opponentÂ
Georgia State is 6-15 in conference play and has a 17-33 overall record this week. Angie Nicholson, the Panthers' second-year head coach, saw her team swept by ULM this past weekend in Monroe, La. The Panthers are led by senior outfielder Emily Brown who records a .378 batting average and 33 runs. In the conference, Brown ranks second in hits (59) and triples (5) and third in stolen bases (24). Right behind her is senior infielder Bailee Richardson, who has a .341 batting average along with 33 RBIs, nine home runs, 46 hits, and 25 runs. Hallie Adams, a sophomore pitcher, has a 4.40 ERA, a 4-10 record, 60 strikeouts, and only 31 walks to her credit. The Panthers are currently ranked 10th in the Sun Belt.Â
Series HistoryÂ
With games beginning in 1985, Georgia State has a 3-2 advantage in the overall series. When these two teams last met, on March 28, 1999, the Golden Eagles defeated the Panthers 4-0. Southern Miss began to score in the second inning after three singles and a sacrifice fly brought one home, and they were only able to bring in four in the fourth inning. With their appearances at the plate, four Black and Gold players recorded at least one hit, and two registered two. Courtney Blades forced the shutout in seven innings of work while striking out 17 batters, issuing four walks, and allowing just two hits.Â
